Zurich, Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Zermatt
Visiting Switzerland is like stepping into a postcard. The picturesque landscape, towering mountains, clear lakes, and rolling hills makes it such a beautiful country. During my 7 day trip, I visited several cities including Zurich, Interlaken, Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Zermatt. Each city had its own unique charm and personality, and I’m excited to share my experience with you.
While in Switzerland, we used the Swiss Travel Pass, which is a travel pass offered to tourists in Switzerland. We spent $350 on the pass, but we never really used it, as it was rarely scanned. We also did not receive as many discounts, as it offered, on activities. We relied heavily on Apple Maps Transit, which made it easy to navigate through Switzerland.
Switzerland is an expensive country, and I have to warn you about that. Everything - from food to accommodation to transportation - is pricey compared to many other countries in Europe. However, you can’t put a price tag on the experience of traveling to Switzerland, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature, adventure, and stunning landscapes.
Day 1
Starting in Zurich, we were met with a mix of old and new architecture, with a lively atmosphere that embodies the city's contemporary edge. It is a bustling city filled with rich culture, history, and architecture. We spent a day here walking around the city and exploring the street performers that lined Lake Zurich. This city was like seeing a blast from the past.
Day 2
Our next stop was Interlaken, which was the gateway to the Swiss Alps. We enjoyed walking the city in the evenings and viewing the meadows in the town center. This city was where we stayed while we visited other surrounding cities.
Day 3
Grindelwald was the next stop on our Swiss journey. A small town that is 45 minutes by train from Interlaken. We only spent one day here and went back to Interlaken at night. The town is like stepping into a world where everything is family-owned and operated. From restaurants to shops, everything was curated with care. We took our time, traveled up both sides of the valley by cable car and even walked on the Cliff walk. On the cliff walk, we walked along the edge of the mountain, which was a thrilling and unforgettable experience.. but let’s be honest, I didn’t make it around the entire mountain edge.
Day 4
On our 4th day, we took an hour train away from Interlaken and found ourselves in the town of Lauterbrunnen. The moment we arrived in Lauterbrunnen, we were greeted by the breathtakingly beautiful landscape that seemed to be taken straight out of a fairytale. (Pictured above) Its picturesque charm with the snow-capped forests, crystal-clear waterfalls, and grassy alpine meadows made it difficult to leave. We spent most of our time hiking and exploring the natural beauty of the area. We walked over 15,000 steps in one day, seeing the famous waterfalls and hiking Trummelbach falls. The breathtaking scenery around Interlaken is unrivaled.
Day 5
Our last stop was in the charming town of Zermatt, home to the famous Matterhorn Mountain. We were excited to take the Matterhorn Paradise Cable Car up to 12,535 feet above sea level. And while the oxygen was thin and the weather was not in our favor, it was still an incredible experience that allowed us to see the beauty of nature in a different perspective.
Day 6
To end our trip, we took the Belle Epoque Train from Zweissimen to Montreux. The train ride was an attraction in itself, offering stunning views of the scenery. (Check out this blog for more about the 1930's train) We then took a train to Geneva and stayed the night for our flight home the next day.
Switzerland is a country filled with beauty, charm, and adventure. It’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful countries , and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to experience it firsthand. I hope this post has given you a glimpse into the majesty of this picturesque country and inspired you to discover the wonders of Switzerland for yourself.
